We have been waiting all weekend long for Lorde to finally hit the stage during the final night of the 2017 Coachella Music Festival‘s first weekend, and she did not disappoint!
The 20-year-old singer gave us an amazing set of new and old songs during her set on Sunday (April 17) at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, Calif.
Lorde started the show with a snippet of her current single “Green Light” and ended the show with the full song. During the set she sang the new track “Homemade Dynamite” for the first time and she performed her song “Sober” for its biggest audience yet.
There was a cool glass box situated on stage and it had dancers performing scenes in it throughout the show. Lorde even got in at one point!
Lorde gets serious on the cover of The NY Times Magazine, on stands April 16th.
The 20-year-old singer opened up about her love of pop music, heartbreak and going unrecognized in New York City.
On not getting recognized in NYC restaurants: “I spent about four months here last year with my laptop out and my headphones on, listening to demos, looking at lists of what I needed to get done and writing songs. People must have thought I was an aspiring poet or something.”
On her appreciation forKaty Perry: “There’s this sadness about ["Teenage Dream"], where you feel young listening to it, but you feel impermanence at the same time. When I put that song on, I’m as moved as I am by anything by David Bowie, by Fleetwood Mac, by Neil Young. It lets you feel something you didn’t know you needed to feel…There’s something holy about it.”
On writing music after a breakup: “After your heart is broken, music enters you on a new level. You suddenly find yourself crying when [Alicia Keys’] ‘Try Sleeping With a Broken Heart’ comes on.”
“I love this picture from last night,” Jack captioned an Instagram photo from the performance. “Means a great deal to be able to play on song on snl in the same broken down way in which it was written. starting to feel more and more that this type of thing is my favorite: giving a large group of people the songs in the same feeling of how they came to be to begin with. friends in a room making work. even brought all the tiny little toys and pictures that were on the actual piano that ella and i did liability on.”
Lorde is opening up about her newly-released song “Liability,” from her second full-length album Melodrama!
“Wow feels big and intense having ‘Liability’ out in the world strange part of myself for a lot of people to look at. Good though,” the 20-year-old singer tweeted. “PS. Not a single for those asking, just a strange little sister of this album really. but i love it ?”
“Jack truly pushed me to a place I’d never been with this album, I couldn’t love him more for it,” Lorde continued. “This song freaked and grossed me out at first & i remember my synesthesia was really blaring in the session, this swirling combo of high school and recent and private and public memories. Felt like when i walk down the hall kind of drunk at a party and shut myself in a bedroom to mumble something happy or sad into my phone.”
