Lorde Reveals Why She Doesn't Play Any Instruments

Lorde Reveals Why She Doesn't Play Any Instruments

Lorde looks ethereal in a photo from her spread in Fashion Magazine‘s September issues, available August 29th.

The 20-year-old opened up about her new music, why she doesn’t play instruments and her creative process. Check it:

On why she doesn’t play any instruments: “I’m hyper-musical, but I don’t really play anything. I write the songs with different chords because I know exactly what I want chord-wise, and then I sing out the chords. I’m very musical, just not in the traditional way, I guess.”

On her creative process: “I make work to challenge myself. The process is very much about me having a conversation with myself. It’s a very private process, and so I feel like I’ve run a marathon by the time it comes out. I do love that people hear the work; I think I would be sad if people didn’t.”

On the importance of writing “true” music: “The main thing is that you’re the only one who has to go home and still be you and live with what you’ve done that day. And so when it comes to making a decision about something, if people say I should [be] a certain way, I think, ‘You guys get to go home and take off the hat; [but] I never get to take off the hat.’”

Lorde Posts Tweet Clearing Up Taylor Swift Squad Confusion: 'Taylor is a Dear Friend'

Lorde Posts Tweet Clearing Up Taylor Swift Squad Confusion: 'Taylor is a Dear Friend'

Lorde has responded to all of the headlines saying that she is no longer a member of Taylor Swift‘s squad by reaffirming that she is dear friends with the country-turned-pop singer.

“Something of a frustrating thing to have to address online,” the 20-year-old “Green Light” singer wrote in a statement on Twitter. “Taylor is a dear friend. I love her very much. In the interview in question I had been talking about Bowie and Patti Smith” as idols of hers, “not Taylor!”

She goes on to describe the “squad,” saying that she finds the idea of it “frustrating.”

“It was never some exclusive club,” she says, “but a wide circle of people, some of whom I know…forgive me for the mild eyeroll I popped when it was brought up as if we’re all blood members of a secret cult.”

She goes on to say that she hates the rumors and headlines, and clarifies that Taylor “has been there for me in all of my dark and light moments these past 5 years.”

There you have it — squad or no squad, Lorde and Taylor are still fast friends.

Lorde Doesn't Consider Herself a Squad Member

Lorde Doesn't Consider Herself a Squad Member

If you’ve been considering Lorde as a member of Taylor Swift‘s squad for the past couple years, it seems you thought wrong!

The 20-year-old singer seemed to distance herself from the squad in a new interview, in which she said she doesn’t hang out with those people at all.

“The second you think too hard about it, you just go insane, so it’s best to be like, ‘We’re in wonderland. That’s just what happens around here,’” she said when asked how she copes with meeting her idols. “Also, I don’t hang out with these people at all.”

When the Sunrise interviewer said she’s a member of Taylor‘s squad, she responded, “You know, you make friends in different places, but I think for the most part I’m not, like, calling my idols for advice necessarily.”

She sang 10 tracks – including hits like “Greenlight” and “Perfect Places” from her new album Melodrama – for about 1,200 people. She also belted out some of her older hits like “Royals,” “Magnets,” and “Team.”

Speaking about her new album, she told the crowd, “It’s all of the most intense moments of your adult life. It’s the saddest that you’ve ever been, or the happiest you’ve ever been. Or it’s feeling as lonely as you can possibly imagine, sitting in your living room touching your own cheek just to feel like someone’s there. That’s Melodrama.” (via The Guardian)

Lorde's 'Perfect Places' Went Through So Many Different Versions

Lorde's 'Perfect Places' Went Through So Many Different Versions

Lorde‘s “Perfect Places” has pretty much been our jam this week.

Featured on her new album, Melodrama, the New Zealand-born musician recently opened up about the story behind the song with Beats 1.

“It was SO difficult to finish,” Lorde admits. “I cannot describe to you how much of a journey this was.”

She continues, “It had so many different forms before it was finished. You don’t want it to be preachy. No one likes a preachy pop song.

“It really exists in that end of the night space I hoped it would. This sort of encapsulates the feeling of Melodrama I think.”

Later on Facebook, Lorde revealed the true story behind the track: “I was living in new york during summer last year, writing melodrama – I’d ride across the brooklyn bridge every day, or sit on the subway uptown in the heat, then go back home to new zealand winter for a week at a time to party with my friends. My life was like a weird little etch-a-sketch I kept scribbling on and resetting.”

“And all last summer, I couldn’t shake the feeling that everyone i knew or saw was searching for something – trying to transcend the news and the screaming pavements, drinking that one drink hoping it’d get them someplace higher.”

Lorde is thanking her fans after learning that her second album, Melodrama, has earned the No. 1 spot on the Billboard 200.

The singer took to social media to share her love and appreciation.

MUSIC: Listen to Lorde‘s new album Melodrama

“You guys, today we have the number one album in america,” she tweeted on Monday (June 26). “From the bottom of my heart, thankyou.

“Royals was, to quote david chase, ‘a moonshot, a dreadnought,’” she went on. “There were no such guarantees with melodrama—that’s why this means so much.”

“When i was a kid i thought big records had to be made a certain way—to be sterile & calculated in craft; that something had to be sacrificed,” she added.
