Adelaide Kane Added This Trait To Mary on 'Reign' & We Bet You Never Noticed

As fans of Reign, we think that we know pretty much everything about the series and our favorite monarch, Mary, Queen of Scots.

But after talking with star Adelaide Kane, JJJ realizes we actually didn’t.

After dishing to us that she would’ve gotten rid of the rape storyline in season two (“That was hellacious, so I would’ve taken that out,” she says), Adelaide revealed that she gave Mary a little trait that we didn’t pick up on.

“After [that], I consciously decided to give Mary a nervous tick. It’s whenever she’s really, really nervous about keeping it together or when her emotions are running high or when she felt threatened, she would rub her insignia ring. It’s almost like a post traumatic stress reflex.”

She adds, “I would rub my rings and I established that in season two. Any times in really high stress, that’s what I would do as a nervous tick. It was more a subtle thing that I would do for me as a subconscious kind of marker.”

“I don’t know if the fans picked up on that or not, or even if I was as consistent with it as I wanted to be. But it’s just a little thing and choice I made for her,” Adelaide shares. “That kind of experience sticks with you for your entire life and I didn’t want to just leave it by the wayside when we wrapped that up. That’s something that will be a part of her forever and I wanted to keep it and did it for the remainder of the show.”

That storyline was a very ripping one and to just let it go wouldn’t be right, and Adelaide agrees.

“It was just really important for me to honor that storyline and the importance of it in the show as a whole. I wouldn’t be surprised if nobody noticed it.”

The Reign series finale airs TOMORROW @ 9PM ET/PT on The CW.

Reign's Adelaide Kane Reveals The Inspiring Things She Learned From Playing Mary, Queen of Scots

Reign's Adelaide Kane Reveals The Inspiring Things She Learned From Playing Mary, Queen of Scots

There are a lot of lessons to be learned in Reign – so so many, and the one star Adelaide Kane took away from the series was such a good one.

JJJ spoke to Adelaide ahead of the series finale of the show, and she revealed just what she learned from playing the Queen of Scots and how she applies it in her everyday life.

“How to take care of myself, so that I could show up to work happy and healthy every day,” she shared as the number one thing she learned. “Just managing a schedule and learning how to balance my eating habits, and working out, and socializing on top of work without burning myself out.”

Adelaide admits it didn’t come easy: “It took me a couple of years to get a handle on it, but just learning to take time for myself when I needed it and prioritizing sleep above everything is the most important thing. It’s no one’s business if i’m not being social – it’s my own. If i need to go home straight after work and do my work for the next day and have a cup of tea and go to bed, then that’s what I need to do and there’s no shame in that.”

Mary had a lot on her plate when ruling an entire country, not unlike Adelaide when she’s balancing everything in her career, social life and more.

“Just learning to schedule everything, and giving myself a break,” she adds. “I don’t have to be everything all the time. If I’m too tired to work out on my day off, I probably should for my health, but it’s okay if I don’t. Just being a more lenient with myself.”

“There’s just so much pressure on women to just be everything,” she shared. “You have to be hardworking and good at your job and then you also have to be really social and maintain a relationship and look after your body and eat right and to be beautiful, and smart, and talented — there’s so much pressure and you don’t have to be all those things.”

The biggest lesson of all? “It’s okay to not be all those things.”

Reign's Adelaide Kane Isn't Actually Related To Mary, Queen of Scots (Exclusive)

Reign's Adelaide Kane Isn't Actually Related To Mary, Queen of Scots (Exclusive)

One of the big things we knew about Adelaide Kane when Reign first started is that she was somehow related to the actual Mary, Queen of Scots.

However, she actually isn’t.

Adelaide cleared up all of that when JJJ spoke to her yesterday.

While she had thought the tartan on her mother’s side was Royal Stuart, it’s actually Stuart of Bute, instead. The tartans are actually quite similar, so we can definitely see if one got confused (see below).

“I was misinformed years ago when I said the tartan was Royal Stuart, but it’s actually the Stuart of Bute tartan,” Adelaide shared with us. “They’re related, but they’re not the same line. It was an error on my part.”

She adds, laughing about it, “The way I see it is that since they are related, I wasn’t entire full of it, but I was…because I didn’t do the proper research behind it.”

Adelaide also told us about researching her family tree with her uncle and finding out all sorts of things.

“It’s interesting because I have a friend who’s descended from an old King of Scots, Robert the Bruce; it’s crazy. All these royal blood lines just pop up in the most interesting places. That’s just what happens as the world expands and people colonize. It’s remarkable that we can track that genealogy and trace it back to hundreds of years.”
