Thomas Doherty Once Wanted To Become A Pro Soccer Player

We couldn’t quite imagine Descendants 2 without Thomas Doherty in it as Hook, yet, acting wasn’t the plan at all for him.

Growing up, the 22-year-old Scottish actor revealed that it was once his dream to become a “professional footballer” aka soccer player.

In fact, he was quite good and his brother actually landed a soccer scholarship in America, but Thomas just couldn’t quite get there. But that’s okay, because he turned to acting.

“While I was seen as a football player, no-one was aware I also did musical theatre,” Thomas shared in a new interview. “I’d have my books and packed lunch at the top of my bag but at the bottom, I’d hide my tap shoes.”

Thomas continues that “on Saturdays, I’d go to musical theatre from nine ’till one and then rush off to the game. Then during the week, I’d turn up for musical theatre with my knees all cut and bruised. It was all a bit Billy Elliott. But I loved both.”

He also opens up about while he loved both, he did get teased more for loving musical theater.

“Any 13-year-old boy who wears leotard and tights two days a week is going to get slagged off,” he shared, grinning. “Young boys were wary of acting. There was a sense it was all a bit effeminate, and I’d get teased.”

Now, he brushes it off, looking at his true friends who were always there.

“It’s part of the banter, and my friends were fantastic and so supportive when it came to seeing my shows.”

Descendants 2 will premiere in the UK, tomorrow, Friday, October 20th.
