Becky G Reveals How She Learned Self Love: 'There Was Constant Pressure To Be Perfect'

Over the weekend, Becky G got real with her fans about how she personally learned self-love.

In a series of posts on Instagram Stories, the 22-year-old singer opened up about how being and growing up in the music industry, she had to face constant comparisons to others.

Becky kicked off her lesson with a post-it note, which read: ‘Another women’s beauty is not the absence of your own’.

“I had to learn this at a young age in an industry where females are constantly compared to each other. I can honestly say I NEVER hated other females, but other females did make me hate myself. It’s a dark place to be in when society f***s you up to make you think you’re not enough because of someone else,” Becky started.

“I spent my adolescence in the prime time of social media and let me tell you, yes, it has made my career and been a blessing, but it’s also been dark and belittling. Negative trending hashtags about my teeth or some made up ‘curse’, terrible comments about my body, assumption about I am as a person and my intentions in pursuing music. There was constant pressure to be perfect. The comparisons to other females because of ‘looks’.

“Just because we’re around the same age and have the same colored hair, meant we were direct competition. They wouldn’t keep in mind the difference in where we came from, styles of creativity/artistry or profession. I would just be considered a ‘wannabe’ version of whatever person they preferred. That killed me inside because I knew ME.

“I learned then that all of this was bulls***. But, before I learned it, it had to get really ugly. The internal battle to not beat myself up was real. I now know that there is not ‘better’, there’s just ‘different’ and that it’s OKAY to be different.

The moral of Becky‘s story: “You can’t make everyone happy. YOU’RE NOT TEQUILA.”
