Simone Biles Says Taking a Break From Gymnastics Was 'Exciting'

Simone Biles is returning to gymnastics training full-time on November 1, and she’s glad she took a break.

“Mentally and physically, I’ve given myself a rest,” the 20-year-old gold medalist told ESPN. “We’ve gone through a lot our entire life and it feels like a job after a while. You don’t know what life is like without gymnastics, so it was exciting to get a little feel of what that was like.”

Returning to the gym will definitely take some getting used to.

“I’ve never taken a break from gymnastics, so it’s weird to see how I’ve lost muscle mass,” Simone explained. “Trying to do the same things feels different. There are some things I look back at and am like, ‘I have to do that again?’ It wasn’t scary before, but it’s scary now.”

We’re glad she was able to take some time to experience being a normal teenager for a while!

Well, almost normal anyway.

Gymnasts often take an extended hiatus after competing in the rigorous Olympic games, but Simone Biles is ready to get back on the beam.

The 20-year-old gold medalist is returning to gymnastics training full-time on November 1 and plans to compete in 2018.

“It’s going to be rough,” she told NBC Sports. “But the muscle memory is there because I’ve come and I’ve played in the gym. All of my skills are basically still there.”

Still, Simone will definitely be trying out some skills she hasn’t done in a while.

“There are a couple of skills, like on [balance] beam, that I haven’t done yet, like a dismount, because why would I just chuck that? There’s no way. And I haven’t vaulted since the Olympics.”

We have no doubt that she will be back and better than ever in no time. After all, as her performance on Dancing With the Stars proved, there is little this athlete cannot do.

Simone Biles‘ boyfriend Stacey Ervin took a serious risk on their first date!

“He took me to a sushi place,” Simone told People. “He knows I don’t like sushi and he forced me!”

Fortunately, the high-risk move paid off.

“It was out of my comfort zone, which I liked,” the Olympic gold medalist continued.

She also got real about what it’s like to date her, and what life will be like for the couple when she starts training full-time again in November.

“He’s an elite athlete and he’s traveled and stuff, so he understands it,” Simone said. “We already know in each other’s lives we don’t come first, and that’s okay with the both of us. So we do what we need to do, and then when we come together it’s fine.”

Sounds like a perfect match. The couple has been Instagram-official for over a month now, and it’s amazing that they support each other’s dreams.

During today’s Day of Giving telethon and relief initiative, the Olympic gymnast and her family were volunteering at a local shelter in nearby Cunroe to support those impacted by the natural disaster.

“We were up at 5 am & started volunteering this morning because we wanted to help our city,” Simone wrote on Instagram.

“There is always something you can do to give back & it doesn’t always have to be money,” she told her fans, urging them to give back in some way. “These shelters still need volunteers, clothes, food & blood donations! It will make their day!”

She added later, “I thank all of the first responders, coast & national guards, army, and volunteers for their endless efforts & support to help. XO.”

So far, the initiative and relief fund has raised over $4.4 million.

“I need you to give me all the tips you can!! #VIPadvice” he tweeted at the Olympian and former contestant.

Simone, of course, came through.

“Embrace the experience, take care of your feet, laugh a lot, have fun!” she responded. “DANCE YOUR HEART OUT! I’m cheering for you and @EmmaSlaterDance.”
