Ian Somerhalder Really Loved Season One Damon on 'The Vampire Diaries'

Ian Somerhalder is opening up about playing Damon Salvatore for eight years.

The Vampire Diaries star loved the character’s first season arc, in particular.

“For me, season one was just the pinnacle for Damon. That was the apex of the ability of this character to shine through story,” Ian told EW. “I loved a lot of that stuff. That stuff was really fun. All the stuff with Damon and Vicki, the dancing in the Salvatore house.”

“In season two, Damon sort of struggles to recognize who he is and he misses being human – there were some great scenes that came out of that,” Ian continued. “But I loved that season 1 stuff: The struggle of Damon to find his love only to learn the naivet of love and that he was duped and that he’s not as good as his brother in the eyes of a woman that he fancied. So those types of struggles, they were real. But there has been an amazing string of very well written scenes throughout these periods of time. 170 episodes, that’s crazy. That’s a lot.”

He added, “Damon has had a very fun time for a very long time. Damon’s had a great run. He’s had a lot of great lines, he’s had a lot of great scenes, there’s been a lot to do, and I learned a lot. I learned a great deal playing this character and navigating the waters of being on a big global hit network series.”

The Vampire Diaries series finale airs Friday, March 10 on The CW.

Candice King Reveals Her Favorite Caroline Moments From 'The Vampire Diaries'

Candice King Reveals Her Favorite Caroline Moments From 'The Vampire Diaries'

Candice King is looking at her eight years on The Vampire Diaries fondly.

She recently opened up about some of her favorite moments playing Caroline.

“The writers have kept Caroline interesting over the years. I am grateful that she’s always had a very strong arc,” Candice told EW. “Even in moments where that arc has been in support of another character and what another character’s processing, I feel like it’s been beneficial to Caroline growing as an individual. With her turning into a vampire, I thought that was such a fun and beautiful, defining arc for her. It was still so early on in the series that I just wanted to keep my job and I wanted the character to stay alive, even if that meant that she had to become dead to do so.”

Candice continued, “I just really loved being here and I didn’t want to have to leave, so I feel like it was a great opportunity and a big step up for that character, so going to work I just was so eager to learn and do my best every way I could. Not that I still don’t do that eight years later, but maybe it’s a little different, a little bit more comfortable now.”

The Vampire Diaries series finale airs Friday, March 10 on The CW.

Paul Wesley Cried While Reading 'The Vampire Diaries' Series Finale Script

Paul Wesley got emotional over the series final script of The Vampire Diaries – so you know it’s gonna be good.

He even sent a photo of himself all teary-eyed to executive producers Julie Plec and Kevin Williamson.

“I wanted them to see that Paul Wesley could actually formulate tears in his personal life and not just on screen,” Paul told EW. “I thought how it ended was powerful.”

Paul also found himself getting emotional while filming the finale itself.

“It’s this very interesting melancholy,” Paul told the mag. “I did Stefan’s final scene with Elena (Nina Dobrev). It was strangely emotional for me. You’re saying goodbye to this time and this moment. The two of us are never going to be playing these characters ever again, and these were really important characters in television for eight years. That’s emotional.”

The Vampire Diaries series finale airs Friday, March 10 on The CW.
