Shannon Purser is not one to stay silent about the problems in our society, and she frequently uses her platforms to educate her followers about a number of issues, from American history to rape culture.
The 20-year-old Stranger Things actress posted a selfie on Instagram yesterday wearing a shirt that reads “END RAPE CULTURE” in black block letters.
“rape culture is schools telling victims not to report rape because it might reflect badly on the administration,” Shannon wrote. “It’s kids being taught that sex is some all important milestone and that somehow you’re not living if you don’t have it asap. It’s women’s testimonies being disregarded because the accusation could ‘ruin the rapist’s life.’”
“There’s no instant fix for this mindset,” she continued. “All we can do is start from the beginning. Teach your children about consent. Take people seriously when they report rape or harassment. Visit RAINN.org for more info.”
We applaud her for speaking out and for using her voice to raise awareness about such an important topic.
Speaking with TVLine at the 2017 Emmy Awards last night, Shannon opened up about the feel of the show, which isn’t at all like Glee.
“I like to think of it as kind of like a Friday Night Lights with music,” Shannon says.
She continues, “It’s not like Glee in the sense that people burst into song. [When they do], it’s all within the confines of the musical that they’re putting on in high school.”
Shannon will also be singing in the show, too: “I get to sing, which I’ve been doing since I was little, so I’m excited about that.”
Shannon and Natalia even had a matching moment — even though it wasn’t planned, but they both wore green to the event!

The Flash actress wore a dress covered with images of dancers while stepping out for the event on Friday (September 15) at the brand’s boutique on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills, Calif.

The private luncheon was held to celebrate the women of television who work in front of and behind the camera.
Guests were given a Phipps watch, a new Tory Burch design inspired by equestrian detail and classic American sportswear.

The actress, who shot to fame on Stranger Things and Riverdale, has joined the upcoming series, as confirmed by a tweet from show creator Jason Katims.
“Act One, Scene One. The table read. #Rise,” he wrote on Twitter with a full cast pic, which includes Shannon, right next to Moana star Auli’i Cravalho.
While we don’t know if Shannon’s role is recurring or a one time thing, we’re still really excited for her!
Rise, based on the book “Drama High”, follows a teacher and family man who takes over his school’s lackluster theater department. In the process, he galvanizes not only the faculty and students but the entire working-class town.
Shannon is also pictured at the Torrid fashion show during New York Fashion Week on Tuesday (September 12).

The Stranger Things star was up for Outstanding Guest Actress In A Drama Series for her role as Barb. However, the honor went to Alexis Bledel in The Handmaid’s Tale.
While Shannon didn’t win, Stranger Things sure did, picking up Outstanding Main Title Design, Outstanding Casting For A Drama Series, Outstanding Single-Camera Picture Editing For A Drama Series, Outstanding Sound Editing For A Series, and Outstanding Original Main Title Theme Music.
“I’m never gonna get over this crazy amazing life I live. Congrats to all the winners last night,” Shannon tweeted the day after.
