Sherri Saum Gushes Over Working With Young Cast on 'The Fosters'

Sherri Saum Gushes Over Working With Young Cast on 'The Fosters'

Sherri Saum is praising the stars of The Fosters, just ahead of the final series finale episode.

The actress, who plays Lena on the hit series, opened up to the Advocate about working beside the young cast, as well as finding a lifelong friend in Teri Polo.

“We got really lucky [with the cast],” Sherri said. “It’s rare to have such cohesiveness and joy in your work, especially when you work 16 hours in a kitchen scene with kids on their Snapchat and all that.”

She added, “It actually turned out to be wonderful, and they taught me so many things. They inspired me so much, especially compared to what I learned in my twenties—these kids are so plugged into what’s happening in the world, and they have a voice and they’re using it.”

Sherri also talked about her friendship with Teri and how at first, she was intimidated by her.

“I was a little intimidated by her,” she confessed. “I mean, she’s balled out. I remember doing the chemistry readings with her. She wasn’t sticking to the script really, and she was joking with all these—in my mind—scary producers. I already had the job at this point, but I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, she’s going off the rails. What’s happening?’”

She adds, “The beauty of it was that it was the contrary—that’s what they were looking for. [They wanted] Somebody who was a balled-out, fearless, strong woman, and that’s really who she was.”

“I started to spend a lot of time with her, and what really did it for me was her sense of humor. She made me laugh so much, and when you can do that, I’m yours. She just had me.”

The Fosters airs TONIGHT, JUne 6th @ 8PM ET/PT on Freeform.

'The Fosters' EP Reveals Which Storyline Got The Most Backlash

'The Fosters' EP Reveals Which Storyline Got The Most Backlash

Three years ago, The Fosters made history by featuring a kiss between Jude and Connor – it was actually the youngest same sex kiss on TV ever.

However, it was also the storyline that the show got the most backlash from too.

EP Peter Paige spoke with Advocate about the groundbreaking moment that is still talked about today.

“Jude’s coming out and particularly Jude’s first kiss…which was this beautiful, chaste, long-earned kiss with the boy who had been his best friend, who became his boyfriend— I was so invested in it,” he shared. “In a lot of ways it paralleled my own childhood, and my own story.”

He continues, “I was so invested in those characters, and it also felt earned, right, so natural and honest that I was shocked at the blowback. We got more blowback on that story than on probably anything we’ve ever done. We got more blowback on that story than on anything that happened in Queer as Folk [the breakthrough series on which Paige starred].”

He believes it was because of their age, which isn’t surprising, but he was.

“I had forgotten that there was this really false notion that gay people don’t turn gay until they’re adults,” Peter adds. “The kiss was more chaste than the kiss in My Girl. And nobody was running around screaming that the people who made that movie were pedophiles. Not only did the sick-o Internet trolls come for us, but some gay people came for us, too.”

“‘You’re making us look bad, you’re making us look like perverts,’” he recalls. “I was astounded. I went on HuffPost—they do a live show about gay issues…Even the host of that was like, ‘So, quite the scandal.’ And I was like, ‘Hi, can we not talk about it like that?’ The truth is, gay adults start out as gay kids. And we need to stop apologizing for that. We are doing gay youth and extraordinary injustice.”

The Fosters' Hayden Byerly Talks Saying Goodbye to Jude

Hayden Byerly is opening up about the end of The Fosters and saying goodbye to his character Jude.

The 17-year-old actor talked with Tiger Beat about what he’s taking away from the show, literally and figuratively, having the youngest gay kiss on television, and more.

On saying goodbye to his character: “Jude is not necessarily just a character that I played, he’s also a part of me. So it’s pretty crazy. It’s almost, saying goodbye to a piece of yourself, something that has been so connected and tied to you for so long. I will never really forget Jude. He’ll always be a part of my life, but it is kind of crazy to just say goodbye to him in this particular way, to say goodbye to him on screen and to not really be able to show him to the world anymore. But there’s so many more characters and things that I hope to do and play in the future!”

On having the youngest gay kiss on TV: “I think that it’s remarkable. I’m unbelievably honored that I was allowed to be a part of history, to make such a change and to do something so big and new in the entertainment industry. The writers had approached me and talked to me about it. To me, I was like, okay, that doesn’t seem like such a crazy thing, not a big deal, but it was. It made such an impact on society, on young kids in the LGBT community that wanted to see themselves accurately represented and portrayed on television. They wanted to see a character that made them feel happy and proud to be who they are. That’s what Jude was.”

On what he took from set: “A lot of people have probably seen it. It’s never been super in your face, but one of those Hollywood license plates on his door, with his name. I ended up taking that from the set, which, if anyone from Warner Brothers calls and asks, I’ll always deny it! I remember that early into the show, when Jude first moved into the house. He always had that sign on his door, and that was one of my favorite things, so I took that.”

'The Fosters' Series Finale Will Have A Much Different Tone Than We're Used To

'The Fosters' Series Finale Will Have A Much Different Tone Than We're Used To

Are you ready for the beginning of the end of The Fosters?

The long-running Freeform series officially starts to say goodbye tonight with the first of three episodes, which has a much different vibe than you’re used to.

Executive Producer Peter Paige chatted with TVLine about the finale event, saying that all the characters we know and love are “older, they feel more mature.”

The episode, which centers on The Fosters meeting Brandon’s fiance, Eliza’s family, has a “different tone and vibe, and the storytelling is a little bit more slow-paced, because it does feel a little bit more mature than the sort of lightning-speed way we told stories in the first five seasons.”

The Fosters premieres TONIGHT, June 4th @ 8PM ET/PT on Freeform.
