'Pretty Little Liars' Features Empowering Female Music For A Reason

Have you ever noticed how awesome the music is on Pretty Little Liars?

Some of the show’s biggest and most shocking moments are so good because the music featured perfectly encapsulates those feelings.

Showrunner Marlene King recently opened up about how important it was for her to pick female artists.

“We strayed away from heavy rock or a male sound. We absolutely wanted the music to be female-centric and female-driven; that was our guideline,” Marlene told Vulture. “We do a lot of great ballads. There’s an artist we had on Pretty Little Liars a lot, her name is Christina Perri. That haunting, sad ballad, soulful sound. She inspires me. A lot of those early montages on the show were set to her songs. It just makes you want to cry when she sings!”

She added, “Going back to the pilot, we had Lady Gaga too. Empowered female music in every sense of the word. We referenced Beyonc on the show. We haven’t been able to afford her music, but we’ll definitely reference her.”
