Rebecca Black Reveals Katy Perry Helped Her When She Was Being Bullied

Rebecca Black became a viral joke when she was just 13 years old, a vulnerable age for anyone even out of the spotlight.

In a new essay, the now-20-year-old “Heart Full of Scars” singer opens up about the constant online bullying, and about how Katy Perry‘s kindness towards her was a light in the darkness.

“There were some breaks in the clouds,” she wrote for NBC. “I got to meet and work with Katy Perry who, in the midst of so much hate directed at me was nice to me in a totally non-ironic way.”

“It didn’t make up for the abuse I was experiencing, but between that and the adults who tried to protect me, maybe it did help mitigate some of the worst of the pain and fear,” Rebecca continued.

“I will never fully understand how I became one of the first people to experience online bullying in an extremely intense way. But I do know now that what happened to me is truly just a global extension of something that goes on in every school, on every computer screen and in every neighborhood.”

It’s amazing that Rebecca overcame that experience and is now using her past and her platform to fight online bullying.
