'Zac & Mia' Stars Anne Winters & Kian Lawley Talk About Not Having A Connection To Cancer Before The Show

There are so many people who are closely affected by cancer on the planet — whether it’s a close family member, friend, or even yourself.

While speaking with Zac & Mia‘s Anne Winters and Kian Lawley, JJJ found out that they both had almost no one in their own families who were affected by the horrible disease.

“My grandma had breast cancer, but it went away really fast,” Anne shared with us. “She got diagnosed and had surgery and then it was gone. Other than that, I haven’t really gone through it personally, having someone really close to me battle cancer.”

While Kian‘s connection to the disease was zero, he did feel like he experienced a similar battle with his own grandma.

“I’ve had no one in my family or close friends have cancer. My grandma had emphysema,” he explains. “I know it’s not cancer, but I feel like I got to know a battle like cancer, and got to unfortunately witness it first hand. I would go visit her at the hospital and she was bedridden. It was hard.”

However, not having a closer experience with cancer first hand, didn’t stop Anne or Kian from connecting with their characters.

“I feel like hearing anyone’s story though…I know that family and friends are a lot closer to you, but I’m not going to lie,” Anne shares. “When we were at the Mattel hospital listening to their stories and details and we were asking them so many questions…when you really get to know their lives it’s so hard hitting. It can be anyone and it will hit you hard.”
