'13 Reasons Why' Season 2 Will Center on Sexual Assault

It feels like we’ve been waiting for forever to hear more about the second season of 13 Reasons Why – and now it’s coming in droves.

In a new interview with THR, showrunner Brian Yorkey reveals that the season will be centering the most on sexual assault and Jessica’s recovery.

“I once read something online where someone said, ‘Well, Jessica told her dad she was raped, so her story is over.’ I remember thinking that right there is reason enough to do a season two, because her story is just beginning — her experience continues to be a central part of season two,” he shared.

Brian adds that the show will focus on her recovery and what it’s like to “go from being a victim of sexual assault to being a survivor of sex assault.”

On top of sexual assault, 13 Reasons Why season two will also focus on Tyler’s (Devin Druid) isolation and decision to buy a gun and explosives; and Clay (Dylan Minnette) coming to terms with Hannah’s suicide.

“In season two, we explore how these characters deal with the aftermath of what happened to Hannah. [Guidance counselor] Mr. Porter [Derek Luke] will be coming to terms with the way that he let Hannah down and will be determined not to let any kids down in the future,” Brian shared recently. “His story is one of the most compelling to me.”

“We’ll see a man who is determined to reach every kid who needs to be reached and help every kid who needs to be helped, whatever it takes. I think he will probably go out of bounds a bit in the other direction, trying to be helpful in the best way that he knows.”
