Ross Butler Talks About Zach & Hannah's Relationship on '13 Reasons Why'

One the many storylines that were a surprise to 13 Reasons Why fans, was the reveal that Zach and Hannah had a summer fling before she committed suicide.

Ross Butler, who plays Zach, opened up to Elle magazine about the reveal of their secret relationship.

“It was a surprise, but it made sense to me, and it felt organic,” he shared. “It was a lot of what I was playing in the first season anyway—I always felt Zach truly cared about Hannah, and was just afraid to tell his friends about her, though I didn’t think that we lost our virginities to each other!”

Their secret relationship and what he did after it ended changed his opinion of Zach.

“I’m a bit more disappointed in him now, but I get where he’s coming from,” Ross revealed. “I think teenagers can relate to the pressure of being someone they want everyone to think they are.”

“It is nice to finally get to see a relationship that’s somewhat healthy, even though it ends for pretty bad reasons.”
