Monique Coleman Says Returning to 'High School Musical' Franchise on 'HSMTMTS' Was 'Nostalgic'

Monique Coleman is opening up about what it was like returning to East High and the High School Musical franchise.

The actress will be one of six original HSM stars who will appear in the upcoming fourth season of Disney+’s High School Musical: The Musical: The Series.

In a new interview with fellow Disney alum Christy Carlson Romano, Monique shared her experiencing jumping back into that world, and confirmed how often we’ll see the OGs.

Check out what she said inside…

“It was so nostalgic, like next level, because 15 years is a long time, fictitiously, and it’s a long time in real life,” Monique said on the Vulnerable podcast. “It’s so meta. It’s so cool, and it was just beautiful to see how different this generation is. These kids are gorgeous, they’re so beautiful, they’re so talented, they’re really grounded, they’re absolutely there for each other.”

“We were as well. We’ve always had each other’s backs, we’ve always kind of protected each other, and I can see that they have that same energy,” she continued. “And going back was really cool because in some spaces we’re not cool, you know, yes, it was a huge movement, but there’s also people who still want to be like, ‘I did not like, I am not a High School Musical fan.’ To be on that set and to be kind of the reason why they are there, was just super, super special.”

She also mentioned how emotional she got walking back into the gym at East High.

“When we walked into the gymnasium for the first time, literally, I walked in, I turned around and I walked right back out because my eyes flooded with tears, and I had to take a deep breath and be like, ‘Monique, just, you know, you have to be professional right now,’” she said. “But it was really moving because it really did change our lives. Our real lives were changed 15 years ago, or 17 years ago.”

She even confirmed that the OGs are in at least one episode, so far (or at least that she can reveal right now!).

During the interview, Monique also opened up about how she was heartbroken after filming High School Musical 3 because of something Disney did, or didn’t do. Find out more here!
