Javicia Leslie Says It's a 'Dream Come True' to Play Red Death on 'The Flash'

Javicia Leslie is back in the Arrowverse, but so far, not as Batwoman!

The former CW star returned last week on the third episode of The Flash‘s final season, as she was unmasked as Red Death, and it’s quite the dream role for her.

Previously, it was revealed that she had been cast in a mystery role in the season, then photos from set spoiled who she was playing.

For those who don’t know, Red Death is a villainous version of Batman from Earth-52, and is a member of the Dark Knights. In the comics, Red Death emerged after losing Robin with Batman taking on more extreme methods of crime fighting.

The character of Red Death was previously mentioned in season five of The Flash.

“The Bat’s out of the bag! Y’all this is truly a dream come true! As a hugeeee Batman fan, to be able to play the iconic evil speedster Red Death is a dream came true!” Javicia shared on Instagram after the reveal.

“When [showrunner] Eric Wallace called me with this idea, we geeked like two kids in a comic shop! We knew this would be fun!!! This role challenged me in so many ways. I always play nice, so it was fun to lean into the bad side for a little. I hope you all have as much fun watching as we had making this story!” she added.

Eric recently opened up about Javicia and Red Death’s appearance.

“There’s a reason why this speedster has shown up here. I’m trying to say this without spoilers, but it’s pretty heavy duty,” he told TV Line. We’re not doing the Metal Knights storyline from the comic book, or any DC Comics Metal- or Dark Metal-related storyline, so we’re not using Bruce Wayne or anybody like that.”

“We’re using kind of a completely different character, and our Red Death will have their own new origin,” Eric continued. there has to be a reason for this character to be not just obsessed with Barry Allen but hate his guts enough to try to take him down and ruin his world.”

“That will become obvious, but it takes a few episodes to peel back the onion of why she hates Barry so much. And I think the audience is going to love it,” he adds. “And what’s great is that one of the key scenes that involves this whole Red Death storyline, it involves Iris.”

The Flash‘s final season airs Wednesday nights at 8pm ET/PT on The CW.

If you missed it, this character died in the second episode of the season…
