Witney Carson Reveals Scary Skin Cancer Incident That Happened During 'DWTS'

Just reading about Witney Carson‘s skin cancer scare gives us more than enough reason to have every little discoloration checked out…but this new bit of information about her experience scares us even more.

In her new cover story with Healthy magazine, the Dancing With The Stars pro dancer, opened up about the aftermath of treating her cancer and heading straight into rehearsals for the show.

Something that, maybe, she should’ve held off on for just a bit.

“During this process [of treating the cancer], I had gotten the call that I was going to be a professional on Dancing with the Stars. This is the first time I was being called as a pro,” she reveals.

“We talked to the doctor and said we really wanted to do this, to make it work. It had been my dream since I was three years old. I asked him straight up if I could just wait to have the surgery until after the season in the summer. He was afraid that if I had waited, I’d have to go through chemo. So that was obviously not the healthiest, best option for me,” she says.

After deciding to have the surgery, Witney found out that the melanoma had spread all the way from her foot to her hip � in her lymph nodes.

After about a month of recovery, Witney headed to rehearsals for the reality competition series, and didn’t tell anyone anything about her cancer.

“I still had the sutures on my foot when I started the first day of rehearsal. So it was really scary, but I just knew that I had to do it…I remember the first day, I wasn’t being careful, I just wanted to prove to everyone that I was worthy to be there.”

“I remember looking down at my foot and I had this big puddle of blood around it. I took off my shoe and my sock and I saw the sutures had completely split back open. That was a really serious thing I had to deal with � and I hadn’t met my partner yet, so I had a long season still ahead of me.”

After that happened, a wound care specialist had to be on set to help her find a way to still dance and having her wound heal all at the same time.

“It wasn’t that painful, as gruesome as it might have looked,” Witney adds. “I think if it was on the bottom of my foot that would be worse, but luckily it was on the top. That whole season I had to have this wound care specialist wrap my foot every single Monday before we went live on the show.”
