“Everybody wants to be a superhero growing up,” she said. “[Riri] doesn’t have these amazing supernatural powers; she’s just a regular girl that is so strong and independent and determined, and that is why she’s a hero. That is great representation because it shows that you don’t have to be this far-out, far-off superhero to really be that in a story. You can be a superhero by just being yourself.”
“I’ve gotten so many amazing, heart-warming direct messages from fans saying how they tried out for the basketball team because of Riri and how they felt like they could do it because she did that,” she continued. “It made them more comfortable in their skin because they saw someone who looked like them on television.”
“It’s really incredible,” she added. “It’s just like I have this big, huge family all across the world, and my fans…it’s so weird saying fans…we’re learning and growing together.”
