On this day in 1997, Bloomsbury published J.K. Rowling‘s Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone in the U.K, and readers everywhere learned about The Boy Who Lived.
The author took to social media to ring in the 20th anniversary with a heartfelt note to fans.
“20 years ago today a world that I had lived in alone was suddenly open to others,” she tweeted. “It’s been wonderful. Thank you. #HarryPotter20.”
Bloomsbury is set to release four new editions of the book, one for each house at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, in honor of the anniversary.
“She had a vision,” Bonnie Wright, who plays Ginny Weasley in the films, added. “Congratulations @jk_rowling #HarryPotter20.”

Can you believe it’s really been 20 years since the first book hit shelves? We can’t either.
In a recent interview, Oliver Phelps (he played George Weasley) opened up about meeting the author, J.K. Rowling on the set of the movies.
“She was probably the most intimidating person I’ve ever met in my life,” he confessed. “Not by any fault of her own, just by ? she made everything that we were doing.”
We can imagine that would be intimidating!
Oliver adds, “I remember we were in Rupert’s dressing room on one of the later films, and she came in and totally blindsided all of us. I think we were doing something silly, like, we were playing darts but with a crossbow or something not very mature.”
“She explained where the twins characters came from and where their influences are and stuff like that. I didn’t want to rock the boat too much and ask, ‘Well, what do they do afterwards … what does one of them do afterwards?’ But it was quite interesting learning the backstories and where the characters came from.”
TELL JJJ: Are you a books or movie Harry Potter person?
Aww! If you were looking forward to watching Harry Potter and the Cursed Child hit the big screen, you’re unfortunately out of luck.
J.K. Rowling says those rumors that have been going around claiming the play is turning into a film are definitely not true.
“I know a lot of people are looking for reasons to be cheerful today, but there is NO TRUTH to the rumour about a #CursedChild movie trilogy!” she wrote on Twitter on Friday (January 20), seemingly referencing Inauguration Day.
The play opened in London last year, picking up Harry Potter’s story 19 years after the last novel ended.
There is a silver lining, though, as Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is still coming to Broadway!

Attention Harry Potter fans: J.K. Rowling‘s hit play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is coming to Broadway!
The play – which originally debuted at London’s West End – will open at Lyric Theatre in Spring 2018.
After Cirque du Soleil’s show Paramour finishes using the theater in April, millions of dollars of renovations will take place, including a smaller, more intimate theater space.
Harry Potter and the Cursed Child – set 19 years after the last Harry Potter book ended – is directed by John Tiffany and based on an original story by Jack Thorne.
J.K. said in a statement, “I’m delighted we are one step closer in bringing Harry Potter and the Cursed Child to Broadway and very excited by the proposed plans.”
The release of the upcoming Harry Potter spin-off movie Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is inching closer and closer and seeing the stars at the New York premiere is getting us SO excited!
Eddie Redmayne and Ezra Miller were among the actors who walked the red carpet at the world premiere held at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall on Thursday (November 10) in New York City.
Author J.K. Rowling also just revealed that the story will play out in five films during a special Facebook Live Q&A on Thursday (October 13) in London, England.
“.@jk_rowling has just confirmed the magic continues in a total of FIVE MOVIES! We can’t wait! #FantasticBeasts,” the official movie account tweeted.
Fantastic Beasts opens in 1926 as Newt Scamander (Redmayne) has just completed a global excursion to find and document an extraordinary array of magical creatures.
Arriving in New York for a brief stopover, he might have come and gone without incidentwere it not for a No-Maj (American for Muggle) named Jacob, a misplaced magical case, and the escape of some of Newt’s fantastic beasts, which could spell trouble for both the wizarding and No-Maj worlds.
Don’t forget – the film hits theaters on November 18. Watch the stream below:
