Director Jon M Chu Reacts to Criticisms of Dark First Look 'Wicked' Photos

The first look at Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo in the upcoming Wicked movies was revealed over the weekend!

Anticipated fans were treated to a photo of each in character, though neither were a close look, offering just a little tease of what they will look like.

However, the photos that were released were dark, and many criticized the dark shading of the pics, something that has been a hot topic on social media for other films as well.

Wicked director Jon M Chu saw some of the comments and criticisms and reacted to what people are saying, assuring fans that there is going to be plenty of color in the upcoming two-part movie adaptation.

“You weren’t told the whole story. What happens when you veer off the Yellow Brick Road? Here is your very FIRST LOOK of #WickedMovie … currently in production in Oz. 🌪️🫧🧹 @WickedMovie @UniversalPics,” Jon first captioned the pics.

He then reposted the photos, adding, “I’ve already been changed for good by these two women… #CynthiaErivo & #ArianaGrande as the Witches of Oz. They will lift ur spirits, break ur heart and leave you speechless with their voices. So excited to introduce you into our world… SO much more to come… 🌈🌪️💚🫧#WickedMovie @wickedmovie”

In reaction to the darkness of the pics, Jon was sure to assure that this is just a first taste at the movie and there will be lots of brightness and color.

“Don’t worry we still have a year and half to show you our colors! Trust me, plenty of colors in Oz. ;) we still have 70 days to shoot left. ❤️🌈,” he replied to one tweet, while also confirming how much filming time is left.

In response to another, Jon said, “Don’t worry, color is in my DNA… this is just the first tease. Plenty of time to show more… stay tuned”

One fan said, “Please don’t be a dark movie…” to which Jon replied, “Don’t worry! It’s not 🌈 this is just the first teaser image. We have a whole year and a half to show you more ;)”
