Joshua Bassett & Sofia Wylie Talk Rina in 'HSMTMTS' Season 4, The Future of Their Characters & More (Exclusive Interview)

Aside from the season four release day, today (August 2), has been a day that many High School Musical: The Musical: The Series fans have been waiting for!

We are officially one week away from the Disney+ series’ fourth and final season debuting on the streamer and ahead of that, we have an exclusive interview right here with two of the stars of the show – Joshua Bassett and Sofia Wylie, who, of course, play fan favorite ship Rina, aka Ricky and Gina.

JJJ note: The following interview with Joshua and Sofia was conducted at the end of June, prior to the start of the SAG-AFTRA strike.

We caught up with the stars and talked to them about Rina finally becoming a couple and if they saw it coming, what songs they would want to do that they didn’t get to do (Joshua may have answered with a song they do end up singing in the final season), and where they see their characters should they also have a reunion in 10-15 years.

“I definitely didn’t anticipate that Ricky and Gina would be in this relationship in season four,” Sofia told JJJ. “Truly, each episode is new for us just as it is for the viewers when it’s coming out weekly. We get the table read for the coming episode or episodes, usually a week before we film it, so it’s pretty new, and I think that’s the perfect way for it to be. Then we can’t get ahead of the storyline and we can’t anticipate certain storylines occurring.”

“I think it’s really cool to see a healthy relationship for once for these characters,” Joshua added. “I think, you know, they deserve a little happy after quite a tumultuous couple years. It’s just cool to see the arc and, you know, the best friends to lovers arc is always a… lovers is dramatic, but you get what I’m saying.”
