The 'Spiderwick Chronicles' Series No Longer Moving Forward at Disney+, Will Search For New Home

It has been several months since we last heard anything about the upcoming The Spiderwick Chronicles!

Now, a year after the show’s young lead actors were announced, it is being revealed that Disney+ has decided to no longer continue with the series adaptation.

The Spiderwick Chronicles is of course based on the books by Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black, which had a film adaptation released in 2008.

Deadline reports that the eight-episode series was already filmed, and the decision comes down to Disney cutting programming costs and reevaluating their content strategy, as many other streamers have been doing over the past year.

While the series is not moving along at Disney+, it’s also being reported that Paramount, the studio who owns the IP, is shopping it around to other studios to potentially find a new home.

The Spiderwick Chronicles was first announced on Disney+ Day in November 2021.

It was to be “a contemporary American gothic coming-of-age story that addresses kids and families dealing with mental health issues among other relevant topics. Upon leaving New York and moving to Michigan and into their run-down ancestral home—The Spiderwick Estate—with their mother, twin brothers Jared and Simon Grace, along with their sister Mallory, find themselves pulled into an alternate, fantastical world.”

Lyon Daniels and Noah Cottrell had been cast as Jared and Simon, respectively, with Joy Bryant as their mother. Christian Slater, Jack Dylan Grazer and Mychala Lee were also cast in the series.

Christian was to play the main villain Mulgarath, while Jack was going to voice Thimbletack and Mychala was going to play the twins’ older sister Mallory.
