Descendants' Dove Cameron Explains How Mal Broke Harry's Heart (Exclusive)

Descendants' Dove Cameron Explains How Mal Broke Harry's Heart (Exclusive)

Dove Cameron is giving us a little backstory before the premiere of Descendants 2.

She and director Kenny Ortega, along with China Anne McClain and Thomas Doherty, decided on the reason behind Uma and Mal’s rivalry – and Harry’s very involved.

“They have a huge history. China‘s character Uma, and Mal, were sort of like Mal and Evie (Sofia Carson) when they were younger,” Dove told us. “They were good friends growing up. Mal actually dated Harry Hook before dating Ben (Mitchell Hope). So that was each of their first loves, which is kind of funny. She was the baddest girl and he was the baddest guy. It was sort of like a Johnny [Depp] and Winona [Ryder] thing. They were madly in love.”

“Some bad stuff went on with Uma and Mal. It was a big rivalry,” she explained. “We never really decided what that was, but basically, Mal disowned Uma and was like, ‘You can’t hang with me. You’re not good enough.’ Condemning her. She was like, ‘You’ll never be as bad as me’ and she kicked her out, and replaced her with Evie. So Uma has all this animosity toward her.”

“And then, Mal broke Harry’s heart,” Dove said. “We also decided that they got secret hook tattoos, and Thomas and I would draw them under our gloves every day. We were so into the backstory (laughs). Kenny would come up to us and be like, ‘Do you guys have the hook tattoos?’ And we’re like, ‘Yeah, Kenny. Every day.’ And he was like, ‘OK, good. Good.’ So funny (laughs). And when Mal broke Harry’s heart, he joined Uma’s gang. That’s why he hates Mal so much. He’s like a broken man because of that.”

Descendants 2 airs July 21 on Disney Channel.

Sofia Carson Breaks Down Her Go-To Outfit: 'I Call It Athleisure' (Exclusive)

Sofia Carson is one of the best-dressed starlets in Hollywood, so we had to ask her about fashion during our recent chat.

The 24-year-old Descendants 2 star broke down her go-to outfit to JJJ – and it’s very different from her glamorous red carpet looks.

“When I’m not working, I have a uniform. I just found a ‘cool’ word for it and I call it ‘athleisure’ now (laughs),” Sofia said. “But it’s really just the same pair of sneakers, black or gray leggings, and a leather jacket with a sweater, and a hat. It just doesn’t change.”

Like her character Evie, Sofia loves to play with her style.

“Growing up, I always spent time in my mom’s closet playing with her accessories and her shoes,” she told us. “My sister and I both really love fashion, and it’s a big part of who I am. I always wanted it to be a big part of my career. So absolutely, I love experimenting with clothes.”

In case you missed it, Sofia recently revealed to us what’s in her makeup bag too!

Sofia Carson Says 'Descendants 2' is a Strong Story About Girl Power (Exclusive)

Sofia Carson Says 'Descendants 2' is a Strong Story About Girl Power (Exclusive)

Who doesn’t love a little girl power?

Actress Sofia Carson recently opened up to JJJ about how Descendants 2 has a strong theme of empowerment and self-love.

“In the beginning of Descendants 2, Evie is literally living her dream,” Sofia told us about her character. “She’s a successful fashion designer. She has her own fashion line. She’s living in Auradon, the place she always dreamed of living. But in the rush to fit it, she’s trying really hard to forget who she is and where she comes from, and forget the girl she left in the Isle of the Lost. Evie’s story is a really powerful and beautiful one about girl power, and most importantly about loving yourself and who you are, and where you come from.”

“When Mal runs off to the Isle of the Lost, Evie has to make a decision about whether she wants to go back and run the risk of never being able to leave, or saving her best friend,” Sofia said. “She decides she has to save her best friend. And she goes on a really beautiful journey of self-discovery on the Isle.”

Descendants 2 airs July 21 on Disney Channel.

Dove Cameron Opens Up About Being Bullied: 'I Had No Friends' (Exclusive)

Dove Cameron Opens Up About Being Bullied: 'I Had No Friends' (Exclusive)

You may think every picture-perfect starlet grew up in the cool kids crowd, but Dove Cameron is proof that’s just not the case.

The 21-year-old Descendants 2 star recently opened up to JJJ about being a self-described “weird kid,” and how she dealt with a lot of bullying, before finding success and solace in her career.

“Yeah, I think I felt that my whole life. I was always really strange,” Dove told JJJ. “I never had a crowd. You know how even the weird kids find a weird crowd? I was too weird for the weird kids. I’m serous. I look very conventional today, but I was…not, growing up.”

“I was the kid that would come to school in costume every day, and I’d ask my mom to cut my hair like a boy. ‘I’m going to fool them into thinking I’m a boy.’ I would dress as like one thing for a month. I would wear fake piercings,” she continued. “I would dress up as Johnny Depp every day. I was weird. I had no friends. But I loved it.”

“I got really heavily bullied. I started to feel that around second grade. But it was because of the bullying. It wasn’t because I had no friends,” Dove said. “I was fine with being on my own all the time, but the bullying got really bad. So I stopped going to school. But then when I came back, I had sort of internalized that I had to be something. You start to feel the pain of that. Like, ‘Something’s wrong with me?’ And I had to go through multiple cycles of ‘I’m wrong, I’m wrong, I’m bad, I’m wrong.’ Until I realized my locust of control was inner and not outer. And I didn’t want to be their kind of right anyway? I know that’s such a hacky phrase. But I found so much solace in the industry.”

She added, “I even felt like I had to fit into the industry at first. There’s a lot that goes into that whole thing. But I found a lot of solace in that I started being my singular self, unabashedly, and people luckily celebrated me for that, now, in my adulthood. But yeah, I think I dealt with it by going really hard into being myself until people were like, ‘Oh, you’re weird. But that’s OK. I guess I can get with that.’
