Maitreyi Ramakrishnan is opening up about what she says was one of her favorite scenes to film on her Netflix series Never Have I Ever.

The young actress stars as Devi in the show, and she dished on doing the “My Fit” TikTok dance in the third episode.

“Oh my God. That was so hard. I love to dance, but am I the most skilled dancer in the world? Probably not. No, definitely not. We were learning that dance in the span of a couple of hours. And me, Lee [Rodriguez], and Ramona [Young] would practice whenever we could,” she told Deadline.

“And then when it came to the actual dance, it was so interesting to see how it was filmed. It was probably one of my favorite scenes to film,” Maitreyi added. “The crew, the lighting guys, the sound guys, everybody got really into it. They would be dancing on the front porch of Devi’s house, having dance-offs.”

Maitreyi also shared what she wants to see happen in a second season. The show has not officially been renewed yet.

“I would love to see Devi love herself. I think that’s an important message that not just high school teenage girls could learn. Just the idea of loving yourself is something I think a lot of people need to hear,” she said.

“I don’t think we do that enough. I don’t think we value ourselves as much as we should. People tend to take care of other people, but they tend to neglect their own emotions, their own well-being, their own mental health,” Maitreyi continued. “Devi’s a prime example of that. She only just started at the end of the series to confront her grief for her father. We can’t go to Season 2 and pretend Devi’s all better now. That doesn’t make sense. That’s not how it works.”

Maitreyi Ramakrishnan is talking about racial stereotypes and her show Never Have I Ever.

The 18-year-old star of the series opened up about how it broke down stereotypes.

“I think it’s great that we have a story like Never Have I Ever but it’s depressing that this is happening in 2020, and even though we can applaud breaking stereotypes, but we can’t forget that we still have so much work to do,” she told Deadline. “Devi is only one story. Hopefully as much as this show inspires other minorities around the world, it will also inspire directors, producers, creators, writers to start bringing that natural inclusion into their shows.”

Maitreyi also opened up her audition process. If you didn’t know, she was cast from an open casting call, and this is her first ever project.

“The audition process was definitely unique, it was a journey in itself, it could be its own movie,” she said. “When I got the ask to L.A. and do a screen test, I had to tell my parents ‘Hey, I just sent this random guy in LA videos of me acting and now they want to take me to L.A. so can I do that?’ After convincing them that this was a very real, legit thing and I’m not being scammed, they were all on board and they were super supportive.”

Maitreyi Ramakrishnan is proving a very important point in her latest interview with Variety.

The 18-year-old actress chatted with the site about her Netflix show, Never Have I Ever, and applauded the series for promoting cultural sensitivity, and that includes pronouncing her name and other South Asian names correctly.

“That active effort for Devi’s name ‘Vishwakumar,’ to get that right, it’s important because that’s her name. You deserve to be called the way you want to be called, no matter what,” she shared.

Maitreyi adds that she knows “obviously, Tamil names are super long. My entire full name — Maitreyi Ramakrishnan — I have 20 letters, but I do have my friends at school that just call me Ramakrishnan and they pronounce it correctly. I think names are so important.”

“I think one of the greatest disrespects you can do to a person is not put the effort into somebody’s name. Personally for me, I used to anglicize my name…in high school, and then when I landed in L.A., they were like, ‘How do you say your name? Sorry, I don’t want to mix it up.’ And I’m like, ‘Oh my God, this is my chance to reclaim my name’ because I love my name. Why would I change it?”

Poorna Jagannathan, Richa Moorjani, Benjamin Norris, Adam Shapiro, Ramona Young, Martin Martinez, Christina Kartchner, Jaren Lewison, and Jack Seavor McDonald also star.

The new show will premiere on Netflix on Monday, April 27th!

Devi, an overachieving high school sophomore, has a short fuse and ends up getting into some difficult situations.

“Hitting you with a ‘Hey guys, I am so excited to announce…’ because I am truly SO excited to officially announce the release date of @loulielang and my new show, @neverhaveiever, coming to @netflix April 27! #NeverHaveIEver follows the life of a modern first-generation Indian American (shout out @maitreyiramakrishnan), and I can’t wait for you to see it,” Mindy wrote on her Instagram.

The series is set to premiere on Netflix on April 27th.
