Francia Raisa Dishes on Selena Gomez Kidney Transplant Experience

Francia Raisa is getting real with fans about what happened after donating her kidney to her close friend Selena Gomez.

The Grown-ish star opened up about the transplant process while stopping by Harry, in the episode premiering on Monday (February 19).

“It’s harder as the donor because we are losing something our body didn’t need to lose, so trying to recover from that and she’s gaining something her body needed,” Francia told host Harry Connick Jr. “So she’s up and at it immediately and I had a hard time.”

“I basically have four scars,” Francia added. “It was laparoscopic, those mothers out there who had C-sections, I feel you. I don’t know how you take care of a child afterwards. It is crazy! I couldn’t get up without having someone help me. That was very humbling. I couldn’t take a shower by myself, I had to have someone help me because I couldn’t move. I’m a very very active person, so the fact that my doctor said I couldn’t move for 2 months. Two months, I couldn’t do anything active. All I could do was walk. That was very hard for me and I have a dog and every day the thing I look forward to is drinking my coffee and walking and I couldn’t do that. It was really really hard.”

When asked if the outpouring of the support of millions of fans was an encouraging factor in her recovery, Francia replied, “Well, so our surgery was in June, our fans didn’t find out about it until September. We wanted that privacy. It was a big surgery. She felt bad about even having me do that because we are just friends, I am not her family or anything. Well, I am now. She has my blood. She felt bad. We just wanted our families around and it was cool because now I have a big family. I lost my grandparents when I was younger…Her grandparents are my grandparents now and so I have this extension of a family and it’s been really amazing.”

Francia Raisa Says Selena Gomez Has Been a Huge Help in Her Career

Francia Raisa Says Selena Gomez Has Been a Huge Help in Her Career

Francia Raisa has been one of Selena Gomez‘s longtime friends throughout both of their careers in Hollywood and the grown-ish actress is opening up to Rogue magazine about their friendship!

Here is what the 29-year-old actress had to share with the mag:

On support from loved ones: “My pastor has been a huge help in my life, just in helping ground me as far as dealing with the difference between my personal life and the industry life. And honestly, Selena [Gomez] has been a huge help in my career. I’ve seen her grow and she’s seen me grow and we have a lot of conversations about the industry. In seeing how much she has to go through I’ve learned a lot myself, and so I’m really grateful to her and what she’s confided in me and taught me.”

On playing a character over 10 years younger than her: “I’m 29 years-old but I’m playing an 18 year-old on this show. I still look so young. That was a struggle for me because I obviously wanted to graduate into playing older roles, but I look so young on-screen. I think I just had to learn to accept that I still look young and that means longevity for my career. I learned to embrace it and appreciate that I am able to participate in shows like Grown-ish because I do look so young.”

On her kidney transplant surgery
: “At the time I was 28-years-old and I couldn’t do things for myself– and I’m a very independent woman, so it was brutal. I couldn’t get out of bed without needing help. I couldn’t shower, couldn’t walk and I couldn’t even open a door. It was a very humbling experience and I’ve learned a lot.”
