Frozen, a full-length stage work told in two acts, is the first and only incarnation of the tale that expands upon and deepens its indelible plot and themes through new songs and story material from the film’s creators.
Since Frozen came out in 2013, fans have been campaigning for the sequel film to include a girlfriend for Elsa — and director Jennifer Lee isn’t ruling it out.
Speaking with Huffington Post, she opened up about the possibility of having a female love interest for Arendelle’s queen.
“I love everything people are saying [and] people are thinking about with our film ― that it’s creating dialogue, that Elsa is this wonderful character that speaks to so many people,” she said. “It means the world to us that we’re part of these conversations.”
While that isn’t a confirmation of any kind, at least Jennifer and the Frozen 2 team are open to it.
“Where we’re going with it, we have tons of conversations about it, and we’re really conscientious about these things,” she adds.
“For me … Elsa’s every day telling me where she needs to go, and she’ll continue to tell us. I always write from character-out, and where Elsa is and what Elsa’s doing in her life, she’s telling me every day. We’ll see where we go.”
The day is here and Frozen has finally arrived on Broadway!
Performances are beginning today for Disney’s new musical and the first new song from the show, an Elsa song titled “Monster,” has been unveiled. Caissie Levy sings the power ballad at the end of act two and The New York Times has an amazing video of her performance.
“It’s a moment of anxiety where the freedom she found in ‘Let It Go’ is shaken, and she hears in the distance the voices of the men coming for her, and she realizes now is the time she has to decide what her next move is,” songwriter Robert Lopez said about the song.
Kristen Anderson-Lopez added, “It’s full of conflicting emotions. It’s got fear. It’s got rage. It’s got her self-flagellation. It’s someone who has been living a double life of secrets and shame that no one knows about, and this is the moment of reckoning with all the destruction that she left behind her.”
Also in attendance were director Michael Grandage and composers Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez.
Frozen will begin preview performances at the St. James Theatre on February 22 and a new rehearsal video was just shared online. The clip shows the cast at the Sitzprobe, which is when the actors and the musicians in the orchestra join forces for the first time to perform the music.
Here’s the synopsis: “In Walt Disney Animation Studios’ 21-minute featurette Olaf’s Frozen Adventure, Olaf (voice of Josh) teams up with Sven on a merry mission. It’s the first holiday season since the gates reopened and Anna (voice of Kristen) and Elsa (voice of Idina) host a celebration for all of Arendelle. When the townspeople unexpectedly leave early to enjoy their individual holiday customs, the sisters realize they have no family traditions of their own. So, Olaf sets out to comb the kingdom to bring home the best traditions and save this first Christmas for his friends.”
