Damon's Proposal to Elena Was Cut From 'The Vampire Diaries' Finale

Damon's Proposal to Elena Was Cut From 'The Vampire Diaries' Finale

While we were so satisfied with the end of The Vampire Diaries, a major moment had to be cut that we would have loved to see!

Executive producer Kevin Williamson just revealed that Damon’s (Ian Somerhalder) proposal to Elena (Nina Dobrev) was left on the cutting room floor due to time constraints in the episode.

“We actually had a moment, which we didn’t have time for — everything got cut,” Kevin told TVGuide.com. “I think the first cut came in 18 minutes over. And there was a moment in the show where he proposed and she responded after medical school. And the whole point of that moment was just to show that she became a doctor. And so we thought, ‘Oh, we’ll just put her in scrubs and we can cut that piece.””

In case you missed it, Kevin also recently talked about why Stefan (Paul Wesley) had to die in the finale.

'The Vampire Diaries' Finale - This Is How It Was Originally Supposed To End!

'The Vampire Diaries' Finale - This Is How It Was Originally Supposed To End!

The Vampire Diaries wrapped up the series into a pretty (bloody) bow this past weekend during the finale.

But that’s not actually how things were supposed to end. Back in season two, executive producers Julie Plec and Kevin Williamson had a different ending in mind.

Instead of – SPOILER ALERT! – Stefan (Paul Wesley) dying, both Salvatore brothers were originally going to die for Elena (Nina Dobrev).

“We had fallen in love with this series and this story about two brothers who loved the same girl and the love triangle was kicking into high gear, we said to ourselves: When all is said and done, when this show is over, both brothers should die in the name of saving their girl and then be watching her like ghosts,” Julie told EW.com. “Because we had introduced the Other Side – as she went off into the sunset to live her life and maybe marry Matt Donovan (Zach Roerig) or maybe become a doctor, but that those brothers would be side-by-side watching her live. That was the thing that made us cry all the tears in season 2.”

That’s right, Elena was going to end up with – Matt! But things changed once Nina left the show at the end of season six.

“I felt like we had to make a commitment to seeing Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Elena through to the end,” Julie explained. “If Nina had never left, I would’ve loved to have been able to see if Stefan and Elena could’ve found their way back to each other. I don’t know if they could have, but had that departure not been a part of it, the long game would’ve been to see if we could bring the love triangle back around before the series ended and really leave a choice. But her departure sealed the romantic contract between Damon and Elena. In that moment, to me, the show ceased to be about a love triangle and became a show about the power of these brothers and their love for each other. And so there was no way in hell I was killing both of them and leaving neither of them with the happy ending. It just was never going to happen.”

So Stelena may have found their way back to each other…interesting!

'The Vampire Diaries' Bosses Reveal Meaning Behind Show's 'Epic' Journey

'The Vampire Diaries' Bosses Reveal Meaning Behind Show's 'Epic' Journey

If you’re a big Vampire Diaries fan, you know the importance of the word “epic” on the show.

Not only was it one of the lines that Elena (Nina Dobrev) delivered to Stefan (Paul Wesley) in the second episode, but the series finale is titled “I Was Feeling Epic.”

“I did a lot of the early writing and Kevin [Williamson, executive producer] did a lot of the re-writing,” executive producer Julie Plec told EW. “We were trying to figure out the show as we went and I wrote the scene where Elena says, ‘We met, and we talked, and it was epic, but then the sun came up and reality set in.’ And I remember Kevin circling it on his script and giving it a triple check. A triple check from Kevin Williamson is, ‘I love this line.’”

Then we heard Lexi (Arielle Kebbel) say it to her BFF Stefan a few episodes later.

Kevin explained, “That line became Julie‘s favorite line of the entire show. From the very very beginning, we kept saying in the writers’ room: ‘It has to be epic. We want an epic moment.’ This whole show has always been about epic moments and that was the line.”

“I Was Feeling Epic” airs on Friday, March 10 @ 8PM on The CW.

Check out the episode stills for the upcoming season eight premiere of The Vampire Diaries!

Co-creator Kevin Williamson and executive producer Julie Plec recently opened up about the last season.

“Things are final now,” Kevin told EW. “Decisions are being made. People’s lives are hanging in the balance. Relationships hang in the balance. Who’s going to end up with whom?”

Julie said, “Fans are always talking about endgame as though endgame has been chosen from minute 1. I don’t know that you could talk to a single series creator that would say confidently ‘Where I started is where I finished and there was no way in hell I was going to stray from that path.’ Dawson’s [Creek] being the perfect example.”

“You have to be open to change and be able to evolve and keep an open mind, because the next idea may be the best one,” Kevin added.

The Vampire Diaries premieres on Friday, October 21 @ 8PM on The CW.
